The 11 Best Foods You Aren’t Eating

Nutritionist and author Jonny Bowden has created several lists of healthful foods people should be eating but aren’t. But some of his favorites, like purslane, guava and goji berries, aren’t always available at regular grocery stores. I asked Dr. Bowden, author of “The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth,” to update his list with some favorite foods that are easy to find but don’t always find their way into our shopping carts. Here’s his advice.

Beets: Think of beets as red spinach, Dr. Bowden said, because they are a rich source of folate as well as natural red pigments that may be cancer fighters.
How to eat: Fresh, raw and grated to make a salad. Heating decreases the antioxidant power.
Cabbage: Loaded with nutrients like sulforaphane, a chemical said to boost cancer-fighting enzymes.
How to eat: Asian-style slaw or as a crunchy topping on burgers and sandwiches.
Swiss chard: A leafy green vegetable packed with carotenoids that protect aging eyes.
How to eat it: Chop and saute in olive oil.
Cinnamon: May help control blood sugar and cholesterol.
How to eat it: Sprinkle on coffee or oatmeal.
Pomegranate juice: Appears to lower blood pressure and loaded with antioxidants.
How to eat: Just drink it.
Dried plums: Okay, so they are really prunes, but they are packed with antioxidants.
How to eat: Wrapped in prosciutto and baked.
Pumpkin seeds: The most nutritious part of the pumpkin and packed with magnesium; high levels of the mineral are associated with lower risk for early death.
How to eat: Roasted as a snack, or sprinkled on salad.
Sardines: Dr. Bowden calls them “health food in a can.” They are high in omega-3’s, contain virtually no mercury and are loaded with calcium. They also contain iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese as well as a full complement of B vitamins.
How to eat: Choose sardines packed in olive or sardine oil. Eat plain, mixed with salad, on toast, or mashed with dijon mustard and onions as a spread.
Turmeric: The “superstar of spices,” it may have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
How to eat: Mix with scrambled eggs or in any vegetable dish.
Frozen blueberries: Even though freezing can degrade some of the nutrients in fruits and vegetables, frozen blueberries are available year-round and don’t spoil; associated with better memory in animal studies.
How to eat: Blended with yogurt or chocolate soy milk and sprinkled with crushed almonds.
Canned pumpkin: A low-calorie vegetable that is high in fiber and immune-stimulating vitamin A; fills you up on very few calories.
How to eat: Mix with a little butter, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Trust me, our campus has excellent and competent leadership and they DO deserve a raise, but good grief this is not the time for it. The cuts are running deep here at Chico, and I am sure no one wants to see tuition go higher or see colleagues and friends lose jobs.
Please read this to see what the scuttlebutt is about:

The California State University System has been warning of enrollment cuts and deep spending reductions as a result of California’s budget deficit. As a result, some faculty and other groups are frustrated by reports of large raises going to senior administrators. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Chancellor Charles Reed has approved salary increases of up to 19 percent for nine vice presidents at California State campuses earlier this year, and approved 11 new appointments of vice presidents at nine campuses at salaries of as high as $225,000.

Here goes:

What if things were switched around? Think about it. Would the country's
collective point of view be different?
Could racism be the culprit???? [This most certainly must be a
rhetorical question!]

What if the Obamas had paraded 5 children across the stage, following
the debate, including a 3 month old infant and an unwed, pregnant
teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his college
graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once and Obama was a divorcee?
What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair
while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain
killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable
organization?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer
distribution?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five
were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting
a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis
of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)
What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?
What if Obama was the one with military experience that included
discipline problems & a record of crashing 3 planes?
What if Obama was the one who was known to publicly display a serious
anger management problem?
You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected a
reality, if the tables were turned, do you really believe the election
numbers would be as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes
qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative characteristics in
another when there is a color difference.
And, think of this - the candidates' educational backgrounds:

Barack Obama:
Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a
Specialization in International Relations.
Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Joseph Biden:
University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in
Political Science.
Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

John McCain:
United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899

Sarah Palin:
